Church of St. Martin the bishop
Ščitarjevo
The parish church of St. Martin in Scitarjevo was built in 1642, although it is mentioned in the documents of the Zagreb archdiocese in the first half of the 14th century. It is decorated in the Baroque style, and the main altar is decorated with a statue of the patron saint of the parish, St. Martin, who is especially revered in this settlement. During its history, it was rebuilt and extended twice, and renovated twice more recently. In front of the entrance portal of the parish church in Scitarjevo, which was built in 1722, there is one of the European landmarks, the “Foot of St. Martin”. It is a unique link of the European Martin tradition, which, with its multiple symbolism, aims to bring together the Martin towns, their people and customs in all their diversity, sharing and promoting the common values that we reveal in the rich European tangible and intangible heritage of St. Martin.
The church in Scitarjevo owned numerous estates, forests and meadows at the beginning of the 19th century, most of which were confiscated during the agrarian reform in 1946, and the parish yard across the street from the church is still the site of detailed archaeological research of the Roman Andautonia, an archaeological site in Scitarjevo that dates back to from the 1st to the 4th century AD and is the only one of its kind in continental Croatia.
