Old wooden school in Kuce

Kuče
It was one of three schools in Turopolje villages that were built in 1923, and the other two were opened in Buševac and Mraclin, at a time when education came first for all residents of this region.

This building is a protected cultural asset and a famous monument of Turopolje wooden construction and has been in Kuce for a whole century. The public school building was completed in November 1923 as a one-story wooden building with two classrooms and living space for two teachers. It was consecrated on November 18 of the same year by the pastor of Velika Gorica, Mijo pl. Stepanic, and the prefect of Turopolje, Franjo pl. Lucic.

It was one of three schools in Turopolje villages that were built in 1923, and the other two were opened in Busevec and Mraclin, at a time when education came first for all residents of this region.

However, the opening and construction of this public school did not go smoothly. The school was advocated by the prefect of Turopolje, Franjo pl. Lucic, and although the assembly first accepted the proposal, they did not want to give up the tavern that operated in the municipal building where the school was originally supposed to be. Later, it was decided to go ahead with the construction of a completely new building where the school will be located, but there was still no agreement. Emilio Laszowski’s records testify to this event:

[…] if the village wanted to build that municipal building on the old court site, she had to give up the concession (regular right to pour wine) forever. The village judge would give it up for the sake of the school, but some among the authorized people started spreading rumors that if the judge gave up the concession, it would be given to Franjo pl. Cuncic, who allegedly already requested this from the financial directorate under the name of his friend Duro pl. Cuncic, who had already […] started to run the innkeeper’s trade under the name of the manager of the noble court.

By 1923, the spirits had calmed down a bit, and the construction of a school was again proposed, namely a large one-story municipal house, which would house a fire station, a council hall and a school. The fire station could still be built near the chapel of St. Fabijan, and the entire construction of the new school was entrusted to Nikola Hribar.

The school in Kuce started operating in the same year, but 100 generations of students did not go through it because it was closed in 1976, and today the students attend the school in Vukovina.
